This Black History Month, your Local 541 was committed to bringing its members valuable words with our second Food for Thought session and spoken word during the BHM Committee’s close out event.
Throughout the months of October and November, the Black Class Action Secretariat’s fight against discriminatory hiring and promotion practices by the Government of Canada was brought to court for a certification hearing. Over roughly 14 days, we heard stories of Black federal public servants and retirees being mistreated, passed over, and blatantly discriminated against.
Local 541 recently handed out Every Child Matters tee made by Indigenous Proud to encourage members to learn more about Truth and Reconciliation Calls 80 and 57.
Many CEIU members trace their heritage to Caribbean nations profoundly affected by British slavery. The legacy of slavery and systemic inequalities still persist today.
As we reflect on this day, it’s crucial to explore its significance beyond American borders, particularly within the Canadian context and the broader British Empire. This article aims to provide high-earning Canadian federal employees with a deeper understanding of Juneteenth and its relevance to our nation’s history and current societal issues.
June is National Indigenous History Month since 2009. June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day since 1996. Both the month and day is about celebrating Indigenous History and is a great opportunity to learn about the cultures and history of the Indigenous people. However, for this National Indigenous History Month, I actually want to highlight a different day.
Did You Know?… April is International Black Women’s History Month! Established in 2016 in the city of Atlanta to uplift and support the achievements of Black and minority women, and to build understanding and awareness of the contributions of Black women to the world.
Black women have always been the backbone of society, empowering our neighbourhoods with strength despite circumstances that challenge our Blackness. The sisterhood between Black women continues to grow tighter and so does our village at CEIU and PSAC.
The International Women’s Day March in Toronto was more than just a city celebration–it was a powerful testament to the strength and unity of women everywhere. Hosted by the incredible women of the CEIU Regional Women’s Committee, it was an eye-opening experience that left a lasting impact of advocacy, sisterhood and strength.
