This Black History Month, your Local 541 was committed to bringing its members valuable words with our second Food for Thought session and spoken word during the BHM Committee’s close out event.
First ever hybrid AGM for Local 541. 2024 Financial Statement was approved, 2025 budget was passed, $80k to be put into a GIC, and investing into our women’s committee.
Our first-ever Food for Thought event was a feast for both the mind and the stomach, as members gathered to listen to Paul Giancarlo (SEDP Director) and Anna Shen (ICPD SPDO) — who took us on a journey through their careers in the public service.

Diwali originates from the Sanskrit word “Dipavali,” meaning a row of lights, hence you may find our workplace Diwali event poster denoting to that name. In celebration of this year’s Asian Heritage Month, the 541 union would like to share a few features from our staff on what Asian Identity means to them.
Throughout their history in Canada, Asians have dealt with many types of exclusion. But with that exclusion, came activism and advocacy. I’m going to take you through the beginnings of that story by discussing discussing how Asian labour activism shifted Canadian history.
