I wanted to share my pride with all of my fellow 541 members, and so we hosted a fun Fiesta full of food! Check out the photos of some classic Filipino baked goods.
There are also so many different religions. We’re not all Catholic or Christian. There’s even codified Islamic Law in the Philippines. Even Christianity itself has been reworked to fit old Filipino animist beliefs. I see it in the way we highly respect and treat nature, and the way our old mythology turned into the most unique ghost stories (watch the Trese anime on Netflix to get an idea).
I could talk your ear off about Filipino precolonial history and how we were all different people with different belief systems and languages. But what I want to impart with you is this: because we were lumped together into one identity, that’s how we ended up finding ways to make room for each other. That’s why Filipinos are so loving, caring, and accommodating. That’s what kapwa is. To feel so connected to others. I could feel it in the land and I found it in our food. And in that, I ended up finding myself.
(So special shoutout to my parents for being offended and telling me I should be ashamed lol.)
